Boy, this is one thing I want to be clear about! In own power and volition
no-one seeks after God! In Romans 3:11 the Apostle Paul declared, "there
is no one who understands, no one who seeks God."
Anyone who is really seeking God is doing so because the Holy Spirit
is already doing a work in their lives. All genuine seeking is a response
to God's activity. When a person finally does come to a point of trusting
Christ, that is not a religious work, and they don't have anything to brag
or boast about (Ephesians 2:8,9); they've simply yielded to His Spirit and
received His free gift of salvation.
This often leads to the question of how broadly God's Spirit is working
and drawing people. Is the invitation genuinely open to every person, with
some accepting it and others rejecting it, or is it effectively open to
only those who are choosing? There are churches that fall on both sides
of the debate! There are Christians in our church who believe either! I
personally believe both! God does the choosing while man is doing the responding!
I think the key issue is that we all need to do our part in making the
message clear and accessible to everyone we possibly can, trusting God to
do His part in drawing people and changing hearts.
Whenever that happens, the Calvinist and the Arminian (some of our Bible
College Students!), can sit at a table together and have a friendly chat
about their theories while they join in joyful celebration with the angels
in heaven (Luke 15:10), over this new brother or sister in Christ!
Let's just play our part and trust God to do His part! |
